kenyan orphan project

Student Programme

The KOP Student Programme aims to provide a holistic programme of experience for volunteers in development and international health through active participation and education. Ahead of a trip to Kenya, we expect students to generate resources and support for specific projects to aid local communities, orphans and vulnerable children. Once in Kisumu, the structure of the programme itself allows students to work with local people and projects with the aim of providing direct assistance and developing relationships and cultural/educational exchange.

What to expect:

  • Each volunteer works with the rest of their university group to fundraise and meet the individual and groups targets.
  • The programme in Kenya lasts two weeks over the summer holidays.
  • The structure of the programme is divided into modules:
  1. Observational activities – government hospital ward rounds, home based care visits, PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS) support groups.
  2. Volunteer activities – street children centre, children’s/feeding centre, primary/secondary school
  3. Physical activities – building, agriculture, specific project tasks
  4. Educational activities – international health and development lectures and workshops

Costs:

Each individual is expected to raise a total of £750 through fundraising activities. 100% of monies raised as the fundraising target go towards the allocated project for the university. The costs of the programme itself are to be met by each volunteer and include costs for flights (around £400, depending on how early they’re booked!) as well as living costs for the duration of the programme. This totals at approximately £450 per student which includes accommodation, food, transport in and around Kisumu and airport transfers, security for the duration of the programme, insurance to cover all activities including any manual work and KOP support for the duration of the programme. None of this money is contributed to any administrative costs at KOP; only costs incurred by KOP for the running of the programme.

Why join up?

  • To raise valuable funds for those in real need
  • To experience another culture and way of life far removed from your own
  • To learn new skills
  • To make friends
  • To network
  • ...and to have fun whilst doing all of the above!
