The fundraising total seems like a lot of money – what happens if I don’t reach the target?

KOP values every contribution and every donation but we make a commitment to our partner projects and therefore expect a commitment from all students who join our programme. However, if you have been proactive throughout the year in your fundraising activities yet haven’t quite managed to raise the full amount, we will still be happy for you to take part in the programme and visit the KOP projects. We obviously do expect everyone to keep their commitment and continue fundraising to meet their target throughout the year.

What happens to the money I raise?

Each university is paired with a project that they will support for the academic year. We ask you to help us raise money for those projects and give you a target to meet. 100% of the money raised is donated to that specific project to fund activities agreed between KOP and the partner project to directly help orphans and vulnerable children. None of that money is used to pay for programme costs or any administrative costs in the UK. If you wish to travel to Kenya to visit the projects as part of the organised student programme then you will additionally be required to cover your costs of that trip.

How long does the programme last?

The programme itself lasts for two weeks; please see the Student Programme page for full details on what to expect.

I am not a medical student – can I come?

Given our history and roots within medical faculties, we would like a link with medical departments wherever possible. However, we are not exclusively made up of medical students; many of our members are non-medics and gain a great deal from the programme.

Will I be safe?

The safety of our volunteers is of utmost importance to us at KOP. We carry out a full risk assessment before we embark on the programme and include full insurance for our students within the costs of the programme. Whilst on the programme we are accompanied by minders from local security agencies at all times. Marti, KOP’s Student Coordinator, is placed in Kisumu for the duration of the programme and is fully prepared for any eventuality.

What happens if the programme is cancelled?

If, for whatever reason and due to circumstances beyond the control of KOP, the summer programme is cancelled, we would endeavour to return all or as much as possible of the monies paid towards the cost of the Student Programme to individuals and the student groups (except anything spent on non-refundable costs). It is why appropriate travel insurance is provided by KOP as part of the programme package. Fundraising to support the projects will not be affected by a cancellation of the programme and in such circumstances, we would hope that student groups would continue their commitment to their allocated project and continue to fundraise until targets were reached.
