Irnthu:- Secretary

Being part of KOP has taught me many things, such as what goes into running a charity and the true extent of the difference we could make to the lives of our contemporaries who are less fortunate that us. It has also given me the opportunity to work with some of the most interesting and conscientious people you could hope to meet. So all in all, thank you KOP.

Fauzia:- Co-leader

Second year medic on the BM4 course. I chose to join KOP for several reasons. Firstly I like the fact that KOP is setting up grass-root projects in Kenya that can be sustained by the locals. Secondly the projects are varied from setting up a hospital to providing a feeding centre for street kids and I am looking forward to going to Kenya and seeing all of the projects that we will be raising money for. And thirdly I was attracted to the prospect of the group fundraising that will be a fun way to meet new people and raise money for a worthy cause.

Jade:- Treasurer

I’m in the first year of medicine and decided to take part in KOP this year, as I wanted to get involved in something over the summer that would be beneficial to others. After seeing the KOP powerpoint I decided that this is what i wanted to do. It is brilliant to know the money we are raising goes directly to the charity and that we will be able to witness and take part in putting that money to use!

Amelia:- Co-leader

Not expecting to be in this position at the beginning of the year, I am now possibly the most organised person. I am a 2nd year, and knew none of the other members in our group before I started KOP, but I now feel like I could call them all friends, and we would all support each other to go to Kenya, and experience the difference that we are making.

Martin:- Apparently in charge of letter writing, is probably the first geologist to get involved in KOP!

I shall bring my great knowledge of rocks to bear upon our work! This should be fun!

Jihan:- I am a second year medic.

I'm 20 years old and l come from Sweden. I consider myself as a happy person that take life as it comes. I've always wanted to get involved in volunteering but had not had the opportunity before. The reason why I chose KOP are many, one being that the students do the fundraising together which makes it a good way to raise money as well as getting to know people. I also liked the idea of getting involved in projects already taking place in Kenya and the variety of projects to get involved in. I look forward to going to Kenya to see the difference we have made.

Our project

Ombeyi feeding centre, funded and built by KOP students, is currently supporting 25 registered Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC's). HIV/AIDS is particularly prevalent in this area and many children are forced to drop out of school to work just to provide food for themselves, their siblings and relatives. Orphans in Ombeyi living with an elderly relative would otherwise often go through a whole day without an adequate nutrition. This project supports OVC's to not only to ensure a balanced diet but also to allow these children to continue their education.

In 2009 the Southampton KOP student group will fund the provision of two meals per day for the existing 25 OVC's at Ombeyi. It is intended to increase this number during the year by a further 25 thereby doubling the number benefitting from the resources available at this centre. If any further funds are available, they will go towards a new water harvesting and management system.

Kenyan Orphan Project is registered in England and Wales as a charitable company limited by a guarantee.
