KOP aims to commit to sustainable projects that will continue to assist local people for the long term and not just provide temporary relief. With our involvement in a number of different activities across all aspects of life, we also aim to improve communities as a whole and not just in one area of development. Central to all KOP activity are orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s). Our priority is always the improvement of the education, health, nutrition and social welfare of children. We see a healthy diet and a basic education as fundamental to the path from poverty and despair for so many OVC’s in this part of Kenya. Projects supported by KOP in 2010 |

In 2010 KOP will continue to fund a weekend feeding programme for over 100 'street children' in the HOVIC day centre, a NGO based in Kisumu. This project will ensure that these orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s) receive nutritious meals, educational development, help, support, advice and medical care from staff at the centre. In 2010 KOP will also continue to provide educational funding support for a number of street children through their primary education, additional support for those within HOVIC in secondary education and also a small number undertaking vocational training. KOP recently funded the purchase of a property in Kisumu to be a HOVIC ‘night shelter’ – a ‘halfway house’ resource for up to 100 street children. This facility provides a fantastic opportunity for children who are particularly vulnerable or are approaching a time in their development with HOVIC to leave the squalor of the streets and be integrated back into their communities. KOP funding in 2010 will provide resources to ensure this important facility remains operational.

The feeding Centre at Kochogo is a rural settlement near Kisumu in an area of particularly high prevalence of HIV/Aids. The centre was built by the work and fundraising effort of KOP student groups in 2005. Since that date KOP funding has maintained the supply of meals to over 75 OVC’s who otherwise may not have any other source of regular food. In 2009, as a result of KOP fundraising and support, this number was increased to 150 and KOP will continue to fund this feeding programme. KOP is also working with other partners to install a bore hole suitable to supply clean, fresh water to the facility and the local community.

Ombeyi is another rural feeding centre very similar to Kochogo, in an area that also suffers from high levels of HIV/Aids in the community. This centre was built by KOP funding and KOP students in 2007. KOP funds a feeding programme for approx 50 OVC’s every day. In 2010 KOP aims to fund the ongoing feeding programme, a new community fresh water bore hole and a water management system on the site.

Kunya Primary School is a rural school on the outskirts of Kisumu and in 2006/7 KOP initiated a feeding programme providing 600 children with two meals a day, enabling them to focus on learning. In 2009 KOP funding raised the number to 640 and in 2010 we aim to maintain the ongoing feeding programme at the school. KOP also aims to fund a new fresh water bore hole and a water management system at the school.

VIMA is a non government organisation (NGO) based in Kondele; an extremely deprived area near Kisumu. VIMA offers support for OVC’s in the area through a number of foster homes and carers; thereby offering personal care in a safe, family environment and concentrates on the educational and material support to allow these children to live as normal a life as possible. In 2010 KOP aims to fund food and household supplies through VIMA to nine specific foster homes and also additional support to educational programmes for 37 OVC’s.

Alendu is a rural primary school that is attended by 600 children from the nearby communities. A high proportion are OVC’s. The area is very poor and the school is extremely run down and in desperate need of re-development. Currently the school buildings are made from traditional materials; principally wood and mud and the walls of many classrooms are simply crumbling away. This is incredibly hazardous for the pupils and many classes are taken outside in the shelter of the trees. Alendu was a new project for KOP in 2009 and will continue to be developed during 2010. New classrooms have now been built but a new Admin block and music room is planned for 2010. KOP also aims to fund the installation of a new fresh water bore hole and an ongoing water management system. KOP is also working with other partners with an aim to plant a comprehensive range of fruit trees on the site.
