kenyan orphan project
Leeds

Hi!! We’re KOP Leeds.
It was our first year on the trip last year and I think I can safely say it was probably the one of the best experiences of all our lives :D This year we want to make KOP Leeds bigger and better. We are a very enthusiastic and friendly team who want to continue to raise as much money and awareness as possible. Last year we ran the Leeds Half Marathon, bag packed in M&S, had a belly dancing night and held multiple cake sales. This year we have already had a cake sale raising over £100 and are hoping to add more exciting fundraising events to our calendar, so watch this space.
If you want to get involved email us at leedskop@gmail.com

Time to meet the team

Pip (President) “Last years trip was amazing! The opportunity to work on the projects and seeing where all our hard work and money is being spent made running the Leeds Half marathon so worth it despite the blister!! Anyone up for joining me this year?”

Sabrina (Fundraising coordinator) “Going to Kenya this summer was not only an amazing experience, but it was truly inspiring. We got to see exactly where and who all the money we fundraise goes to, and it is such a worthy cause. Everyone is so grateful for what KOP does, it has inspired us to make it bigger and better this year! We met some amazing people from Kenya with all their unique experiences and from other universities who we still keep in contact with. I would not have done my summer any differently :D xxx”

Debbie (Treasurer) "The time I spent in Kenya last year was such an amazing and memorable experience. To be able to see and meet all the children that the money we raised was going to help meant a lot to me. I would reccomend the experience to everyone, I was talking about my experiences for ages after!"

Tash (Secretary) “Thinking about our trip to Kenya brings back so many astonishing memories. Our tour included teaching in schools, working in feeding centres, visiting an orphan shelter and building a school and it was such a delight to help and meet some of the incredible people who live in such poverty. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work in such a magical country."

Jess (ex-president) “I literally had the time of my life in Kenya this summer, met some amazing people out there and it was a real life experience. I think it is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in international health, learning about a new culture and meeting new people! And the fundraising is always a good laugh!”

Liz (ex-president) “Last years trip was such a success and Leeds had such a great group of people who went out! The experience was unforgettable and I am very much looking forward to the promise of this year!”

Our project

VIMA is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Kondele; an extremely deprived area near Kisumu. VIMA offers support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC's) in the area through foster homes and carers; thus offering personal care in a safe, family environment and concentrates on the educational and material support to allow these children to live normal lives.

Money raised by KOP Leeds will finance the living costs of 34 orphans and vulnerable children to sustain the family environment, education costs such as books, uniforms and fees, and health expenses. In order to support this and to facilitate the support of more children waiting for VIMA's help, KOP will finance the administrative and staff costs of the programme. Any further funds will allow the initiation of income generating activities (IGAs) for VIMA and the expansion of child support.
