Our aims for 09/10
This year’s King’s KOP wants the whole university to know what KOP is and what we do. Our dedicated team of about 30 people aims to raise a total of £25,000 over the academic year, not only through personal fundraising targets, but by hosting events that all Kings students can enjoy.

The summer of 09
Who said men make better builders? This year a 14 girl and 2 boy team of eager KOP students headed to Kisumu where we helped out at the building site for 8 new classrooms at Alendu Primary School for 6 days. We collected water, shoveled cement, straightened nails, sawed wood and were lucky enough to experience the satisfaction of directly contributing to what we raised money for over the year.
We taught some lessons at local primary schools about airborne diseases and nutrition, visited VIMA and HOVIC to learn about the work they do and how KOP helps them, visited hospitals and patients and helped prepare lunch at a feeding centre that we raised money for a couple of years ago. During the lessons we learnt just as much from the children as they did from us, and their eagerness and energy to learn was inspiring. Visiting the projects introduced us to some amazing people who we will remember forever and look forward to seeing again. We learnt so much over the two weeks about Kenya and its people and the problems they face.
Our group highlights included Michelle from VIMA teaching Andy to dance, Magda at OMEN feeding centre for being so cute, riding in pimped out Matatu’s – specifically Stima Girl and its thumping base, learning the lyrics to The Carpenter Song, seeing Gloria the hippo in Lake Victoria and the joy it brought Marti, Tony the Sopsop Queen, Alex the braun, Thomas the brains and little Ian Barack Obama, the popcorn stealing baboons of Lake Nakuru and the comeback of the human pyramid. Oh yes and who could forget Gerald, the Duke of Breeze’s ‘special’ resident.
Thank you to everyone who supported us on our trip to Kisumu this year. We really did have the time of our lives.

Our project

The high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, low levels of income and lack of industry have been major contributing factors for poverty in this area of Kenya. Most people live below the poverty line and are unable to provide children with basic needs or a formal education. In the absence of support may children are orphaned and migrate or are forced onto the streets. HOVIC (Hope for Victoria Children) is a project in the centre of Kisumu town that offers shelter and food for some of the many street children; providing a refuge away from the violence and drug abuse that is rampant on the streets of Kisumu. HOVIC provides access to the basic means of survival; clean water, two meals per day, healthcare, education and support. HOVIC aims to provide children with a path from life on the streets, to foster homes, schools and jobs.

Funds raised by KOP King's this year will allow provision of two meals a day at weekends for 100 street children. KOP will also pay for school fees for 15 street children in primary education, 10 in secondary education and vocational training for a further 10 children.

In 2008, KOP purchased a property to develop into a night shelter for street children. KOP King's money will ensure the formal opening of the centre in 2009 providing a halfway house between life on the streets of Kisumu and the safe environment of a foster home. Money will pay for provisions including bunk beds and mattresses and a 'night-mother/father' to ensure support for the residents.
