kenyan orphan project

getting involved

Student involvement is at the core of enabling us to achieve what we do with projects in Kisumu but there is a lot more to our programme! We want an active exchange with the students participating in our programmes; we want our students to understand the issues faced by children in the developing world and to contribute to sustainable systems to ease the problems.

The main strengths and purpose of Kenyan Orphan Project student groups are concentrated in the following areas:
  • Support of KOP project work through physical participation and volunteering
  • Support of KOP project work through provision of financial resources
  • Support of KOP project work through provision of material resources
  • Provision of education/awareness of developing world issues to young people in the UK
  • Provision of experience of development work/projects to volunteer

We need enthusiastic, bright and proactive students to help us grow and to fundraise for our carefully selected projects. If you are a student and you would like to do something constructive with your summer holiday, then consider joining an existing group or setting up a new group to make friends, learn new skills and ultimately contribute to improving the lives of children with very little. If you are a student at one of our current universities and you would like to join up, please contact the group leaders at your university. If you are a student at a university without a current KOP group, why not start one!

Why be a KOP group leader?

If you are looking for a challenge, and the chance to inspire people to help others, then a year as a KOP student leader is for you. You will have the chance to:

  • Educate and inform young people about the challenges facing the developing world specifically in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa
  • Recruit young people to make an active contribution to working towards meaningful goals in the struggle against poverty, deprivation and suffering
  • Have a say in the way that you support and help with KOP projects specifically with regard to the functioning of your student group
  • Express and realise your passions and talents through leading a group working towards a KOP project
  • Travel to Kenya leading your university group and helping to coordinate its activities in Africa in conjunction with KOP
  • Develop your skills and experience as a leader

With good organisation and vision, cohesive and focused KOP student groups can make a real and decisive contribution to project work going on in Kenya.

If you think this sounds like something you could do, please contact Martina for further information about setting up a KOP group!

What qualities do you need?

You will need to have good communication skills and be able to lead your group through the year in its fundraising, work towards project goals and organisation of the summer trip where applicable.

You will need to stay in close contact with KOP throughout the year and concede to KOP requests and advice on the running of groups and activities both in the UK and in Kenya.

A good sense of humour is useful and you should not be afraid to have fun as leader - you should encourage students to get involved in any way they can.

You should not be afraid to ask for help or advice. If you are unsure about anything, or have a problem with your group, you need to approach Martina, KOP’s Student Coordinator, early and not leave things until the last minute. KOP has been involved with work in Kenya and with student groups since 2001 - we should be able to help you with anything you need to know.
